Devotionals Eureka! Philip found Nathanael, and said unto him, We have found Him of Whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. John 1:45 Nathanael answered and saith unto Him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, Thou art the King of Israel. John 1:49 The Greek word Eureka! means, I have found it! The background of how Eureka became a word for all languages is interesting. Archimedes was a third century B.C. Greek mechanical engineer and mathematician. Archimedes was assigned the task by the King of Greece to discern if the royal crown that had been given him was pure gold or of a mixture of alloys. Archimedes studied this problem for weeks. Finally, while taking a bath, the mathematical genius realized that water was displaced in the tub in proportion to mass of weight of his body. Archimedes had discovered the key to weighing metals. True gold will displace a precise amount of water in proportion to its mass. The water displacement of gold will be different than that of iron or copper. Archimedes had made a world changing discovery. He had the answer for which he had long sought. He ran through the streets of Athens shouting, Eureka! Eureka! Eureka! I have found it! He had found the key to weighing metals and determining their content.. The word Eureka has become a universal word signifying joy at some great discovery. In John 1:45, the Holy Spirit uses the same word, Eureka! Philip said to Nathanael, We have found Him! In the Greek New Testament Philip said, Eureka! We have found the Messiah, the Son of God. Lifes greatest discovery should make you shout, I have found Him! Jesus is lifes great Gift from God. He is the One Who searched for you. He came for us, died on the Cross for our sins, shed His precious royal blood for us and rose again. He will take you to Heaven and guide, bless, and keep you every step of the way. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Psalm 73:24 Such love and grace will make us shout, Eureka! We have found Him! |
